Why the Room Works- Eric Ennis w/ The Furniture Connector (Charlotte, NC)

Written by Anne Marie Ashley

We asked Eric Ennis, designer at The Furniture Connector in Charlotte, to give us the rundown on one of his most recently designed client spaces. Here, he explains why this space works so well and outlines some of the key design elements he used to create it.
“When any client approaches me to create a design for them, I always ask what the overall goal and feel for the room will be. Betsy Mapes in Charlotte wanted to create a music room that she and her family could enjoy and utilize to create music together.

She wanted a Mid-Century Modern style mixed in with her family’s more traditional pieces. This room works well because of the balance between old and new. One of the main focal points of the room is her family’s piano, which we paired with a modern wood mirror by Global Views provided by The Furniture Connector. The wood tones from the mirror complement the piano and allow all of the other pieces of furniture to stand out independently.

Betsy wanted to infuse the room with history, so we created a photo wall filled with photos from multiple generations and of family treasures. The darker wall color really allowed a centerpiece like this to pop. Keeping the lines of the upholstery clean while having a Mid-Century undertone allows everything to work happily together.”

Winterize Your Home- The Furniture Connector in Charlotte,NC

2007halloweenHeader02.jpg

Dear Furniture Lover:Apparently, Old Man Winter arrived overnight!  It’s cold!  They said it would drop 30 degrees yesterday and I think the weather people were correct! I definitely had a briskness to my step this morning.

With Halloween on Monday, the other holidays are fast approaching and as I grab my chest, the new year will be hear before we can utter those famous words!
So before we all stand here with a deer in headlights staring into the “yonders” of the world, we need to pull it together, make a plan and get our places-where-we-call-home ready for winter!

Let’s Hit Indoors!

SAM_1234Over the past few weeks, The Furniture Connector has received several tractor trailers of new furniture, lamps and accessories. Trust me, we have received more than you can shake a stick at!

We have posted most of our newest lovelies on our website under “Off The Truck” and it’s worth a click away!
Grab you a coffee refill and pre-shop away!  BUT, stop right there and read this disclaimer…
“Objects in the pictures are even more fabulous in person! AND, not all furniture in our store is photographed here!”
I guess that’s really two disclaimers but I hope you get my thought process!

NOW, let’s think about the whole house from the cold weather standpoint.  It’s going to be here before you know it.  I reached out to Do It Yourself website and wanted to share the 20 easy steps of how you should “Winterize your home”

Winter Preparation Checklist

  1. Have your furnace professionally serviced. This includes cleaning and checking the supply lines, furnace ducts, filters and thermostat.
  2. If you have a fireplace, have your chimney cleaned to get rid of any creosote build up. Also have your fireplace damper checked to be sure it is opening and closing properly.
  3. Purchase or chop a supply of firewood and store it outside, away from your home’s foundation.
  4. Check the glass in your windows and doors, if any is cracked or broken replace it before the cold weather gets here, (Don’t forget your basement windows as well).
  5. Look at the caulking around your doors and windows. Remove any that is cracked or peeling and install fresh new caulking while the weather is warm enough to do the job.
  6. Add weather stripping around the edges of doors and windows to prevent cold drafts from coming in during the winter.
  7. Clean leaves and debris out of your gutters so fall rains and melting snow this winter won’t freeze and pull them right off your house.
  8. Trim any tree branches that are overhanging your roof or are close to electric or utility wires.
  9. Turn off the water supply to your outside taps and drain the water supply lines leading to them.
  10. Drain all your hoses and put them away in your shed or garage. If you have a lawn or garden sprinkler system be sure to drain it and blow out the lines as well.
  11. Check to be sure your handrails and walkways are in good condition. If they need work, now’s the time to repair them, not after the cold weather arrives.
  12. Drain the gas from your lawn mower and any other engines that won’t be used until next spring. Getting the gas out of the engine will prevent old gas from gumming up the carburetors, making the engines easier to start next spring.
  13. Make sure your snow blower will start and have it serviced if there is a problem.
  14. Make sure your snow shovel is in good repair and replace it if it’s not. It’s also a good idea to spray your snow shovels with WD-40 or cooking spray to prevent snow from sticking when you’re shoveling.
  15. Plant your spring bulbs and dig up any bulbs (such as dahlias) that won’t survive in the cold.
  16. Buy some bags of salt, ice melt or sand so you can avoid the mad rush when that first snow fall comes.
  17. Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to be sure they’re working and install fresh batteries.
  18. Gather the phone numbers of your utility companies as well as your furnace technician and store them near your telephone or tape them inside your phone book.
  19. Prepare for an emergency. Get a supply of bottled water, non perishable food, a flashlight and batteries, candles and matches or a lighter, warm clothes and blankets, a portable radio and a camp stove for cooking.
  20. Consider purchasing a back up generator so your home will be able to function even without utility power.
I know…it’s a long list but a list that I think is very thorough!
Now, before you start that list, throw your coat on and come on over to The Furniture Connector!  Our store opens at 10am today. Contact Info: 2905 Griffith Avenue Charlotte, NC 28203 | 704-507-9023
