Construction with Communication to Completion

Imagine that you’re building a new home. It’s evening and you’re itching to swing by the jobsite and see how the work is going. It’s getting dark, your lot is 30 minutes away—and besides, you went to the site yesterday. Then you remember, you can monitor the status of your job from your laptop and voila—you are downloading photos of the latest construction activity.

Someday it may be standard procedure for all homebuilders to provide clients with virtual updates of their projects. But the future is now at Relicon Companies, a Charlotte general contractor that, says co-owner Joshua Rozewski, “gives each one of our clients a unique user name and password to our Website, where we post pictures of the progress and a field report of what was accomplished that week—plus an updated schedule so you know what to expect for the next two weeks.”

In so doing, Relicon is bringing to the homebuilding and remodeling market a concept that is now employed on high-profile commercial construction. On jobs such as office towers and high-rise condos it’s now common for builders and architects to create a custom Website for each project, a place where everyone involved can go to review plans, pictures, and progress.

“We want to use the same idea with our new home and remodeling customers, by keeping them up to speed on all stages of the project,” explains Rozewski. Together with partners David Reader and Thorsen Colberg, the threesome founded Relicon on the principle of keeping clients informed. “From my experience in the industry,” notes Rozewski, “I’ve seen how general contractors have gotten a bad name when it comes to keeping in touch with clients. So we founded Relicon as a construction company where communication is number one with our customers.”

While quality workmanship is a paramount priority for Relicon, the owners know that effective project management and site supervision are essential for a successful project. The three partners bring a combined 21 years of industry experience to Relicon and, in their past positions, have worked on more than $250 million worth of construction contracts.

Rozewski says Relicon brings to the homebuilding and remodeling business another principle from the commercial construction field. “The industry has moved toward a collaborative approach,” he reports, “where the owner and all of the different parties get together as a team from the early stages of the project. So our project managers, superintendents, and tradesmen work with you, to keep you involved at every stage of your new home or remodeling project.”

Though Rozewski believes that constant communication between builder and homeowner should be the norm, he admits that Relicon’s commitment to good communication meant that “we’re not your typical general contractor.”
