A Natural Beauty Birds chirping, subtle breezes, the sun’s rays beaming down — When Peter and Phyllis Fulton want to relax in heavenly solitude, they need not look further than their own backyard. When the Fultons first purchased their home in Dilworth, they were certain that it would be the perfect backdrop to suit their family life. The Fultons decided on the addition of a swimming pool to not only provide a functional recreational outlet for their children but also to complement the natural atmosphere they wanted to create in their backyard. “We didn’t want our pool and yard to feel artificial or overly manicured,” said Phyllis Fulton. “Instead, we wanted to create the illusion of a calm mountain pool in a natural setting.” Jo and Simon Spiers together with Tommy, from Pool by Design, confidently accepted the job. They approached the pool design with the goal of creating a natural setting that also embraced the recreational benefits of a family outdoor living space. The Fultons are elated with the final results. “Now we have a literal extension of our home’s living space, our backyard is our favorite room,” said Phyllis. The Pool by Design creative team designed an irregular shaped pool and coated the interior with dark material to create the appearance of a natural water feature. A hot tub joins the pool one level higher and gracefully spills over into the pool, creating the soothing sound of a waterfall. Natural stone accents the space and creates the mountain inspired theme that the homeowners desired. The graceful flow from one element to the next, contributes to the soothing tranquility of the backyard haven. Differences in the yard’s elevation were separated by stacked stone seating walls. Stone pavers form the walkway to the pool and decking, and large boulders, ornamental trees and landscape lighting were brought in to highlight the immense beauty of the Fulton’s backyard retreat. Pool by Design referred Bill Blair of Landscape Logic for the vision and creation of landscaping design to accent the pool work. “We were impressed with the craftsmanship and commitment to customer satisfaction from Pool by Design,” said Phyllis. “Our hand-built pool has surpassed our expectations and added tremendous value to our home and family.” The return on investment has indeed been great for the Fultons. Their two children get plenty of exercise and fresh air outdoors while the family enjoys the perfect setting for entertaining family and friends. The Fulton’s pool has become a popular gathering place in the neighborhood. “It’s enormously satisfying to create such wonderful backyard environments,” said Simon Spiers.
