Healthy Air, Healthy Home

The amount of moisture underneath a home or structure affects everything from structural integrity to personal health. Too often, out of sight means out of mind.

When we think of new construction or remodeling, some basics come to mind such as paint colors, flooring, lighting, and perhaps countertops - all tangible eye-appealing enhancements. But one of the most important considerations should be what lies underneath your structure.

"Your floor is the one single plane that affects your entire house," says Jim Brettman, COO and general manager of MoistureLoc, Inc. "You shouldn't ignore what's underneath." Since 1988, MoistureLoc has made a science of sealing and waterproofing crawl spaces and basements in new and existing structures to eliminate moisture; this, in turn, secures the structure's longevity and provides a healthier environment throughout.

"We fundamentally believe in fixing the source of the problem," Brettman says. "MoistureLoc is the most experienced and reputable waterproofing company in the Charlotte area for troubleshooting and solving below-grade and crawl-space moisture problems."

Moisture is likely to seep into the structure due to foundation cracks, poor drainage, or other factors. Because the Carolinas' air humidity levels are so high, moisture often doesn't have a chance to dry out and tends to accrue under the structure producing harmful spores that rise through air ducts into the living space. In addition to polluting the air, moisture can lead to mildew and mold damage in the living area, musty odors, buckled hardwood floors, insect infestations, and high humidity throughout living and work spaces.

MoistureLoc's waterproofing products are manufactured by renowned national supplier Tremco Barrier Solutions, and are backed by a transferable warranty. MoistureLoc's remedies for moisture problems include drainage systems, conditioning, and sealers for existing home and business owners, but that's only a portion of their clientele. Many builders also see the advantages of properly sealed spaces and drainage systems and hire MoistureLoc in their projects' initial stages.

Sajjan Dhaliwal of Jas-Am, Inc. is a custom builder who has MoistureLoc install a Sealed Crawlspace System in every home he builds. "I do it 100% across the board," he says. "It stops mold from growing through the wood which can make people sick, and it alleviates excess moisture that would damage the structure."

When choosing paint colors, carpet and flooring, don't forget about what's underneath your structure. "A properly waterproofed foundation, proper drainage, and a properly sealed crawl space or basement make huge differences when it comes to air quality and the structure's longevity," Brettman says. "It's one of the most important upgrades or enhancements one can make."
